The Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) has awarded Yellowline Asphalt Products Ltd. its annual Environmental Excellence Award.
A relatively new tenant at the Port of Hamilton, Yellowline’s facility on Pier 22 was designed in 2011-2012 with the environment in mind. The facility includes sophisticated dust control and recycling systems. A unique safety feature avoids possible overflows: tanker trucks drive onto a scale to be weighed, after which a pre-set amount of asphalt cement is loaded into the truck. Temperature probes were recently installed within the roof of the asphalt tanks. If a probe becomes immersed in hot asphalt, it will immediately trigger an alarm system that halts all of the pumps.
Each year, the winner of HPA’s Environmental Excellence Award is invited to select a local Hamilton-area environmental organization to receive a $5,000 donation. Yellowline chose the Hamilton Conservation Foundation, which will put the funds to good use in protecting and promoting Hamilton’s watershed through educational initiatives and conservation land acquisitions.
