Wärtsilä becomes first BWMS supplier with dual technology type approval

The Wärtsilä Aquarius UV Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) has been granted U.S. Coast Guard Type Approval. The Aquarius UV is the company’s second approved BWMS technology, the first being the U.S. Coast Guard-approved Wärtsilä Aquarius EC.

Aquarius UV (Ultra-Violet) technology utilizes proven filtration and UV irradiation, while maintaining a high degree of safety and operability. It retains its effectiveness regardless of water quality.

The Wärtsilä Aquarius EC (Electro-Chlorination) system features a simple two-stage process involving filtration and electro-chlorination across the full scope of a ship’s operating and environmental conditions.

In addition to the Coast Guard approvals, both technologies have also been awarded Type Approval by the International Maritime Organization.
