SMF Collaborative: A pivotal development for a sustainable future

April 3, 2025
A major step has been achieved for the Pacific Northwest maritime industry’s clean energy transition with the launch of the Sustainable Maritime Fuels Collaborative (SMF Collaborative).

The initiative was facilitated by Washington Maritime Blue, a Green Marine association member, with the leadership of several key partners: the Port of Seattle, the Northwest Seaport Alliance, the Port of Tacoma, and the Washington State Department of Commerce (all Green Marine members), as well as the CHARGE Consortium. It aims to accelerate the availability, affordability and deployment of sustainable maritime fuels and low- and zero-emission vessels and technology in the Pacific Northwest.

By consolidating a diverse range of voices from across the maritime value chain — fuel producers, ship owners, port communities, NGOs, labour unions and more — the SMF Collaborative is leading a fair and effective transition to sustainable marine fuels in the region. Aiming to achieve net-zero emissions in the region’s maritime sector by 2050, the SMF Collaborative intends to support pilot projects, define regional standards for sustainable fuels, promote environmental equity, and create high-quality jobs.

The SMF Collaborative’s Founding Leadership Committee has been tasked with shaping the future of sustainable marine fuels in the Pacific Northwest.
