Port of San Diego’s green efforts focus on electrification and protection of the bay

October 8, 2026

During Green Port Month in September, the Port of San Diego highlighted its progress on air quality and bay protection. The update features the latest results from its Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS), adopted in 2021 to reduce emissions from maritime activities.

The Port and its partners have committed US$240 million to maritime electrification and freight efficiency. These commitments support shore power improvements, the replacement of diesel-powered cargo-handling equipment with electric alternatives, and the introduction of the first fully electric tugboat in the United States. The Port reports that it has met 67% of its MCAS goals and implemented 88% of its objectives set for 2026.

According to the update, vessels connecting to shore power and using the emissions capture and control system at berth have achieved the following emission reductions:

  • 75% for diesel particulate matter;
  • 63% for nitrogen oxides;
  • 30% for greenhouse gases.

The annual Green Port Year in Review also highlights the addition of 1,050 linear feet of Coastalock tide pool units along Harbor Island and the Sweetwater Channel. In addition, 200 employee volunteers helped collect approximately 6,000 pounds of rubbish, while operations at Zuniga Shoals removed 93 US tons of sunken vessels and marine debris.

Together, these initiatives combine maritime emission reductions with practical measures to protect San Diego Bay. Learn more through the Port’s Green Port Month update.
