Port of San Diego deploys Smart Buoys to enhance bay monitoring

January 29, 2025

The Port of San Diego is taking another step forward in environmental innovation with the deployment of HyperKelp’s Kelp Smart Buoys. As part of the port’s Blue Economy Incubator program, these state-of-the-art sensor platforms will provide real-time data on San Diego Bay that will support sustainability initiatives that enhance the bay’s health.

HyperKelp Inc., the latest company to join the Blue Economy Incubator, has developed these advanced buoys to collect and aggregate environmental data. Equipped with sensors to measure chlorophyll levels, water salinity, carbon dioxide emissions, and sound, the Smart Buoys will play a crucial role in monitoring the bay’s water and air quality, as well as underwater noise levels.

The data gathered will inform key port programs, such as the Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS), the Vessel Speed Reduction Program, and shellfish and seaweed aquaculture planning efforts. Additionally, the buoys will contribute to environmental conservation, restoration, and projects with nature-based solutions.

Easily recognizable by their bright yellow colour, large flat-sided design, and blinking top light, these innovative buoys will soon be visible throughout San Diego Bay, actively working to maintain a clean and healthy marine environment.
