Earlier this year, the Musqueam First Nation and Ocean Group signed a collaborative framework agreement to realize marine sector opportunities within Musqueam territory, and potentially beyond.
The agreement holds commitments that prioritize economic and social benefits for the Musqueam community, and contracting opportunities for Ocean Group. They include capacity development initiatives that would establish career opportunities for members of the Musqueam community, working on water or land.
The first such initiative has involved training five members of the Musqueam First Nation as bridge watch persons/deckhands in collaboration with the Marine Campus at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. The successful trainees are now completing an onboard internship with the goal of job placement with Ocean Group.
Ocean Group has also committed to a fuel supply agreement with Nation Clean Energy Inc., another Musqueam partner, to obtain a supply of low-carbon renewable fuel products.
The company hopes to establish meaningful, enduring business relationships with other Coastal First Nations, by reaching similar collaborative framework agreements.
