CSL's MV Nukumi Named Bulk Ship of the Year 2022

The MV Nukumi, the newest self-unloading vessel in the Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) fleet, has been named Bulk Ship of the Year 2022 by International Bulk Journal (IBJ).

A purpose-designed vessel to service Windsor Salt’s shipping and handling needs for de-icing salt in Eastern Canada, it is the first diesel-electric laker and the first single-point loader to operate in Canada.

The award recognizes the MV Nukumi’s various state-of-the-art technology to improve safety, efficiency, and performance and to reduce the vessel’s environmental footprint. Its design and equipment will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants by 25% and 80% respectively, compared with previous vessels servicing the same routes.

Diesel-electric Tier 3 engines, a ballast water treatment system, a waste heat recovery system, and overall quieter machinery are some of the innovative features.
