CSL releases its 10th annual sustainability report

June 29, 2023

For the 10th consecutive year, the CSL Group is presenting the company's progress and ongoing initiatives on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in its 2022 sustainability report.

"As CSL explores new and exciting horizons in the marine sector, our unwavering commitment to people and the environment will always remain at the heart of our business," says Louis Martel, CSL’s president and CEO. "We will always prioritize decisions and practices that have a positive and meaningful impact on people and our planet."

The report outlines the concrete actions undertaken or completed by the company last year in terms of decarbonization, marine pollution prevention, employee well-being, community involvement and corporate governance. A few of the environmental highlights include:

  • An 80% reduction in lifecycle emissions using B100 biofuel on eight vessels
  • 8% of the total energy consumed by CSL ships was renewable
  • Increasing recycling by 15% as a percentage of the total waste on CSL ships
  • A 90% reduction in the use of plastic water bottles in CSL's Americas fleet

A full page is devoted to the environmental performance of CSL International and Canada Steamship Lines within the Green Marine certification program, with a graph showing the continuous improvement of both entities since 2018.

The report again this year charts CSL's progress towards its goals of zero injury/damage to people, planet and property, and its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
