ABS appointed to drive new U.S. Center for Maritime Innovation

October 9, 2024

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has appointed the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to establish and oversee the new U.S. Center for Maritime Innovation.

Supported by MARAD’s Office of Environment and Innovation, the Center aims to advance emerging marine technologies and practices within maritime transportation.

Christopher Wiernicki, ABS’s chair, says that ABS’s vast experience in marine classification and research situates it well to manage the Centre’s resources in addressing pressing environmental challenges related to maritime transport.

Over the next six months, MARAD and ABS will establish the Center and engage stakeholders in developing research priorities and projects, as well as emphasizing the significance of decarbonization and digitalization in maritime operations.
