The Interlake Steamship Company has ordered what is believed to be the first U.S.-flagged freight vessel being newly constructed for the Great Lakes since 1983. The new 639-foot freighter will be built at the Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding plant in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, over the next three years. Every aspect of the vessel have been scrutinized to ensure its low environmental impact on the Great Lakes. The hull has been optimized for efficiency and all systems have been designed for low energy consumption.
