West Coast electric ferry trials involve new FRS Clipper partner

June 23, 2025

FRS Clipper has teamed up with Greenline Ferries in conducting a series of test runs for a next-generation electric ferry in British Columbia. The Artemis EF-12 Escape features a hydrofoil that lifts the boat above the water, providing a smooth, quiet ride while significantly cutting energy consumption.

Built in Belfast, the vessel can carry up to 150 passengers and reach speeds of 36 knots, nearly twice the cruising speed of conventional ferries. Thanks to its electric propulsion and hydrofoil lift, it consumes between half and two-thirds less energy than traditional vessels, offering a promising path toward more sustainable regional marine transit.

Demonstration sailings took place in Victoria on June 16th, followed by runs in Vancouver, Bowen Island, and Gibsons on June 20th, 21st, and 22nd. These trials focused on collecting detailed energy and performance data, while also ensuring regulatory alignment through collaboration with Transport Canada, local port authorities, and community leaders.

Beyond technical evaluation, the trials are intended to help shape future services that align with local needs. FRS Clipper and Greenline are currently exploring new ferry connections within Greater Victoria, including potential links between Victoria and Colwood, or Esquimalt and downtown Victoria. These routes are being considered as ways to ease congestion and improve regional mobility.

FRS Clipper has identified eight to 10 possible routes across the Lower Mainland and into Washington State where this technology could be deployed. With lower energy use and significantly reduced operating costs, these electric ferries create new opportunities to expand service to coastal communities.
