VFPA releases its 2018 sustainability report

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) 2018 sustainability report delves into the environmental aspects of its economic and social activities, and relates the progress in addressing the impacts. The report outlines the actions being taken to make the Port of Vancouver the world’s most sustainable port. In 2010, VFPA embarked on Port 2050 — a long-range scenario planning process involving more than 100 individuals and organizations with a stake in the port’s future. The process identified four plausible scenarios, including one that depicts a shift to a low-carbon economy that balances economic, social and environmental sustainability.
VFPA’s notable 2018 initiatives include:
- Improving the port’s Green Marine rating
- Launching the International Collaboration on Ship Emission Reductions, which aims to increase the participation in vessel incentive programs worldwide and the overall efficiency of ships in the global fleet. It was launched with support from Transport Canada, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Green Ports and Vessels Initiative, and the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Gothenburg.
- Helping to launch the World Ports Climate Action Program with the ports of Antwerp, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Barcelona, Long Beach and Los Angeles.
