As part of the Fairview Terminal expansion project, the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) also began implementing its shore power project to reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions from berthed vessels. The shore power will permit ships at the terminal’s dock to turn off their engines during loading and unloading operations, powering necessary onboard facilities with cleaner hydroelectricity instead.
The shore power project is part of PRPA’s Carbon Reduction Strategy that aims to reduce the greenhouse gas intensity by 30% at the Port of Prince Rupert by 2030 (compared to 2018 levels) and to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Various tests have already been conducted with the CSCL Summer container ship to confirm the terminal equipment is functional. The PRPA expects to commission the two berths and make the equipment operational when the next phase of the Fairview Terminal expansion is completed in 2022.
