The Canadian government, through the Oceans Protection Plan, is investing in projects aimed at improving ballast water management systems to counter invasive species in the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River (GLSLR).
In the GLSLR River region, treating ballast water presents technical and operational hurdles due to varying water conditions, including cold temperatures, freshness, and occasional sediment mixing. The federal government’s Ballast Water Innovation Program’s (BWIP) efforts are underway to enhance industry knowledge and expertise, with the ultimate goal of aiding Canada in safeguarding the environment.
In December 2023, the government announced $10 million in funding for four projects supported by the BWIP, which are crucial for preserving marine ecosystems essential to public health and the environment.
The four recipients of this funding are Mouawad Consulting Canada LP, Albion Marine Solutions Ltd., Algoma Central Corporation, and St. Lawrence Shipoperators, with the latter two being a Green Marine participant and association member, respectively.
The $3.8 Million granted to Mouawad Consulting Canada LP was secured in collaboration with partners Boll & Kirch, bestUV, KraftPowercon, and Lower Lakes Towing (Green Marine participant) and aims to compile comprehensive data, assess critical challenges, and explore potential solutions to ensure BWMS compliance and efficiency within the GLSLR region.
