Transport Canada funds projects to better manage and reduce underwater noise

August 11, 2022

More than $3.1 million is being invested by Transport Canada in some 20 projects to minimize the disturbance caused to marine mammals by underwater noise from vessels in Canadian waters. This August 11th announcement follows the Quiet Vessel Initiative launched in June 2021 when Ottawa initially related new funding for innovative technologies to reduce underwater noise.

The funded projects will target safe and practical approaches, as well as provide tools to the marine industry to:

  • implement effective low-noise designs for new-builds
  • monitor noise in real time
  • detect the presence of marine mammals and notify nearby vessels

Several Green Marine members are involved in some of the selected projects, including Clear Seas, Maritime Innovation, Ocean Wise, and SLR Consulting Ltd.
