BC Ferries welcomed the newest Island Class ferry at Ogden Point in Victoria, B.C., July 22 after the ship’s 64-day maiden voyage from Damen Shipyards in Romania. The ferry then headed for Point Hope Maritime’s shipyard where final inspections will take place and BC Ferries will take ownership of the vessel.
The Island Class are battery-equipped ships designed for full electric operation in the near future. The ships are fitted with hybrid technology that will bridge the gap in available electrical energy until shore-based charging infrastructure and funding become available in British Columbia. The design of the new vessels lowers emissions, reduces underwater radiated noise, and improves customer service.
The Island 3, and Island 4 (currently on its way to B.C.) will enter in service in 2022 and provide two-ship service on the Campbell River – Quadra Island Route. BC Ferries looks forward to officially naming the vessels later this summer.
