The Port of Sept-Îles recently unveiled the 5 Stars Blue Program, an initiative to encourage ship owners to adopt responsible environmental practices. Inspired by Green Marine, this program offers discounts on port fees to commercial vessels that implement measures to reduce their environmental footprint.
The program is based on two major axes: reducing atmospheric emissions and limiting underwater noise. By focusing on preserving marine mammals and endangered species, the Port of Sept-Îles encourages ship owners to invest in sustainable technologies and obtain environmental certifications.
Ships are evaluated according to a three-tier system and are eligible for up to 30% reductions in port charges. The Commandant Charcot, a hybrid vessel running on liquefied natural gas, was the first recipient of this incentive, underlining the importance of innovation in the maritime industry. Ponant, a French ship owner with Green Marine Europe certification, owns the vessel. Other vessels, such as the Bella Desgagnés, also stand out for their exemplary practices in reducing environmental impact.
The Port of Sept-Îles also relies on research and innovation to develop new ecological solutions adapted to industry requirements. In collaboration with researchers, studies on ship electrification are underway to identify viable alternatives for reducing the carbon footprint of maritime transport.
