The Port of Québec has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first port in the Americas to receive Biosphere certification, a worldwide recognition of its efforts in the field of sustainable development. This certification demonstrates the Port's application of continuous improvement processes, connected in real-time with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and with indicators developed in partnership with the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN).
Developed by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), the Biosphere methodology offers a unique approach to sustainability management and certification for companies and destinations. It enables sustainable efforts to be highlighted transparently and verifies their compliance with internationally recognized criteria.
The announcement of this certification was made at the fifth International Cruise Forum, organized by the Port of Québec and Destination Québec cité, held on February 14. The event brought together representatives from the tourism sector, the maritime community, and civic groups to discuss the responsible development of the cruise industry. The Port also reaffirmed its commitment to the electrification of dockside vessels, with projects underway in collaboration with Hydro-Québec. The Port expects to submit a shore-side electrification project for cruise ships by the end of the month.
“With pride, we celebrate the Port of Québec's historic feat as the first cruise port in the Americas to attain Biosphere certification. Their steadfast dedication to embracing sustainable maritime practices sets an inspiring precedent for the industry. This milestone underscores their profound commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible tourism, aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 2030 Agenda,” said Brent Mainprize, Executive Director of Biosphere in Canada.
