The Port of Prince Rupert successfully tests new shorepower capacity

February 2, 2021

At the Port of Prince Rupert, COSCO Shipping Lines (Canada) Inc. recently participated in the commissioning test of the shorepower installation at DP World’s Fairview Terminal. The CSCL Summer operated off the shore power system for the 24-hour test and appears to have drawn about 27,805 kWh (27.805mWh), averaging 1.183MW per hour.

The successful testing was done through the significant efforts of various people, despite the necessary port, terminal and crew restrictions in place to ensure COVID-19 safety protocols.

BC Hydro, Moffat & Nicol, SEL Schweitzer, Magna IV, Pacific Northwest Electric, Crown, and Schneider Electric also had personnel on site to ensure the successful testing.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Low Carbon Challenge Fund and Climate Smart provided funding for the project which is expected to provide fully operational shore power later this year or by early 2022.
