The PIER at the Port of Halifax asks for student input to improve waterfront access

September 9, 2023

The Halifax Port Authority is seeking input from post-secondary students in Nova Scotia to improve the accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists between Point Pleasant Park and the Halifax waterfront to encourage the area’s use.

Its Green Pathways Challenge invites students to collaborate on proposals with 3D or digital illustrations for an accessible, environmentally friendly pathway connecting the two locations. The PIER, which is the port’s centre for maritime innovation, is leading this initiative with an emphasis on the importance of creative ideas.

The primary route, Marginal Road, is currently used by industrial vehicles, which poses safety concerns. The port authority is committed to making waterfront access easier for pedestrians and cyclists and involving students in shaping innovative approaches for this project.

Students have been encouraged to explore the area before submitting their proposals by the September 25th deadline. The challenge offers a $1,000 cash prize with the winners announced September 29th.
