The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the global trade association for ship owners and operators. The organization represents national ship owner associations around the world and more than 80% of the global merchant fleet.
With members from 40 countries through national ship owner associations, ICS legitimately and uniquely represents and speaks on behalf of a significant majority of international shipping operations. These include dry bulk carriers, oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas carriers, container ships, general cargo ships, offshore support vessels, and passenger vessels.
Established in 1921 to ensure the development, promotion and application of best practices throughout the shipping industry, ICS continues to support the industry as the leading advocate for high operational standards and a regulatory environment that embraces safety, the environment, open markets and fair competition.
As the collective voice of the international shipping industry, ICS articulates and advocates ship owner positions to international regulators, namely the International Maritime Organization and International Labour Organization, as well as to other government regulators and relevant stakeholders. ICS aims to positively influence regulatory changes while maintaining high standards of quality, safety and environmental protection.
Being an independent, not-for-profit trade association based in London, England, it is managed by its secretariat for the benefit of the national ship owner associations and their members.
