Canadian Marine Month returns for its second consecutive year this October as a result of the partnership between the Canadian Marine Careers Foundation (CMCF) and Canadian Geographic Education. Their joint program introduces students from Grades 5 through 12 to maritime careers as well as science, technology, engineering and mathematics – the STEM subjects – through classroom activities and interactive online events.
With presentations from various industry professionals, students can explore ports, ships, and simulators across Canada while engaging with experts in the maritime sector. The program also offers hands-on educational activities that let students learn what it feels like to manage tides in Prince Rupert or use biofuels to power ships. The goal is to inspire the next generation to join the expanding maritime sector.
With its vast coastlines and freshwater resources, Canada boasts a thriving maritime industry. However, 43% of the current workforce is set to retire in the next decade, creating an urgent need for an estimated 19,000 new workers in the navigation, engineering, and logistics fields.
