The 25th issue of Green Marine Magazine celebrates the organization's 15th anniversary!

December 7, 2022

This second digital edition of Green Marine Magazine and 25th issue celebrates Green Marine’s 15th anniversary!

It’s hard to believe that the environmental certification program has been in existence for 15 years, but then you look at everything that Green Marine’s membership has accomplished and it’s amazing to see all the positive changes made within a decade and a half!

As you’ll read in the Q&A with Ray Johnston, who always has been and continues to be on both the forefront and behind the scenes of the Chamber of Marine Commerce, Green Marine and, most recently, the Canadian Marine Careers Foundation, the small group of CEOs who came together to address maritime transportation’s pressing environmental issues sparked a new more open and collaborative culture within this industry.

We’re also pleased to share a few other cherished memories from people who have been involved in Green Marine from its earliest days, as well as some who have joined more recently.

A lot of things are now starting to happen more quickly and need to do so in order to slow global warming. This digital format made it possible to pivot in response to the announcement by the Canadian and United States governments in early November regarding the intention to foster a green shipping corridor within the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway region. You’ll find some key considerations as to next steps in this development.

There’s also more about the exciting news from the Interlake Steamship Company regarding the first new laker on the U.S. side in nearly 40 years from Mark W. Barker who enjoys the deserved honour of having this vessel named after him. We thought Green Marine’s 15th anniversary was also a good time to look at what some of the leading Canadian ship owners have done in terms of fleet renewal since Green Marine’s inception.

Finally, we’ve taken the opportunity in this issue to lend some greater perspective on how the program itself has evolved in terms of its environmental performance indicators over the past 15 years, as well as how the participants have fared in response, most recently with their 2021 reporting. Some reflections on where Green Marine is likely headed over the next 15 years are likewise included with immense optimism based on the record turnout at GreenTech 2022 – Green Marine’s 15th annual conference!

Happy anniversary, and happy reading!
