Sweetwater Park: A new coastal oasis on San Diego bay

April 4, 2025
The Port of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista have announced the official opening of Sweetwater Park. The 39-acre (17.5-hectare) public green space on the Chula Vista Bayfront is the port’s 23rd park and the first completed project within the broader Bayfront redevelopment plan. It offers residents and visitors a nature-focused experience that protects and celebrates the coastal environment.

Sweetwater Park includes features that enhance local ecosystems, such as the introduction of native plant species and the creation of wildlife refuge areas. These elements work in harmony to provide a natural environment that people can enjoy while also protecting the bayfront’s ecological integrity.

The park is part of a 535-acre (216.5-hectare) redevelopment project that will transform the Chula Vista Bayfront. The park’s opening—just ahead of the Gaylord Pacific Resort—underscores the dedication of the Port of San Diego, a Green Marine participant, to promoting sustainable economic development alongside nature-based public access.
