Study by Clear Seas aims to help shipping industry in its quest for zero impact

October 13, 2022

Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Marine Transportation (Clear Seas) is conducting a study focused on reducing the environmental footprint of marine transportation. The research project is being done in conjunction with the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the National Research Council (NRC) Centre for Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Research.

The project aims to play a key role in reducing the shipping industry’s environmental footprint, which is already the most energy-efficient mode of transportation but accounts for nearly 3% of global CO2 emissions.

With a wealth of opportunities available to ship owners to improve the environmental performance of their operations, Clear Seas, UBC and NRC are offering a study to guide their decision-making. By highlighting research and development efforts, the research project will support strategic decision-making with technology recommendations that can be incorporated into new generation ships or used to convert existing vessels.

Taking multiple criteria into consideration, the project will develop a sustainability assessment framework that considers the overall environmental impacts of shipping and the extent to which different technologies can help to mitigate them.

Made public once developed, this assessment framework will help ship owners to identify solutions and prioritize them according to their potential to improve their environmental performance at all levels.
