Seattle, WA, April 5, 2022 – SSA Marine, a Carrix Enterprise, which operates marine terminals at nearly 90 locations in 10 countries, is the latest company to join the leading voluntary environmental certification program for North America’s maritime industry. SSA Marine is enrolling their C60 container terminal dedicated to Matson Navigation in Long Beach and their conventional West Sacramento location. These two terminals in California will be SSA’s first to pilot the program and, if successful, will result in a broader rollout with Green Marine.
“We’re committed to actively participating in enhancing environmental performance in the marine terminal industry,” said SSA Marine’s CEO, Knud Stubkjaer. “Joining Green Marine’s comprehensive environmental program aligns with our commitments to incorporating best practices in each region that we operate.”
David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director, welcomes the major terminal operator to the program’s membership. “By joining Green Marine at the corporate level, SSA Marine is solidifying its leadership in sustainable development,” Bolduc said. SSA Marine subsidiary Western Stevedoring in British Columbia (Lynnterm and Squamish Terminals) has been certified since 2013.
SSA Marine notably won the 2020 North Star Environmental Stewardship Award from the Northwest Seaport Alliance, another Green Marine participant. The award recognizes a range of environmental initiatives by the company that include exchanging traditional lightbulbs to LED to reduce energy consumption by 1.2 million kilowatt-hours; transitioning to compostable products at the Harbor Island corporate headquarters, which removed 26 tons of landfill waste annually; and reducing CO2 emissions by 157 tons yearly through SSA Marine’s commuter benefits program.
To achieve Green Marine certification, SSA Marine will assess its environmental performance through indicators that address such issues as greenhouse gases, spill prevention, dry bulk handling, community relations, waste management, and environmental leadership. The certification process is rigorous and transparent, with results independently verified every two years and each participant’s individual performance made public annually. SSA Marine will release their first annual results on their environmental performance in 2022, to be published in 2023.
