SPIPB adopts SETI Media Technology for rigorous air quality monitoring

January 6, 2025

As part of the battery project development in Bécancour (Filière Batterie Bécancour), the Société du parc industriel et portuaire de Bécancour (SPIPB) is implementing a comprehensive air quality monitoring program to ensure the precise and transparent tracking of environmental impacts.

SETI Media has been awarded the more than $300,000 contract to install four strategically positioned monitoring stations – three on the St. Lawrence River’s South Shore and one on its North Shore.

The stations will continuously measure air pollutants identified in a September 2023 study, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and certain metals, such as zirconium, which can potentially harm air quality and public health.

Data collection is set to begin by this April or May, providing a clear picture of the current air quality levels before new industrial facilities become operational. This proactive approach aims to anticipate and manage environmental impacts, offering authorities and the public real-time access to reliable information.

The approach is inspired by best practices in environmental management, with particular attention paid to the cumulative impact of industries in the region, notably in consultation with the Abenakis, who have a consultative role in this program.

The collected data will also be analyzed by an independent firm, which will issue a yearly report accessible to the public.
