SLGO marks two decades of advancing data-driven St. Lawrence knowledge

October 8, 2025

The St. Lawrence Global Observatory (SLGO) is celebrating its 20th anniversary by showcasing its years of work dedicated to observing, sharing, and promoting knowledge about the St. Lawrence River. For the occasion, the SLGO shared a special newsletter (in French), presenting key figures that illustrate the organization’s growth and inviting its community to join the November 13th event “20 ans de données FAIR dans le Saint-Laurent” marking the 20 years of St. Lawrence data collection.

Since its founding, the SLGO has helped to transform how knowledge about the river is disseminated. Among its accomplishments are the release of 10,000 Fisheries and Oceans Canada datasets and the preservation of unique historical archives on fish catches, some dating back to 1944. Its Navigation app remains a key resource, consulted about 30,000 times annually by mariners, boaters and researchers.

The November 13 event is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements made possible through the collaboration of researchers and partners, and to collectively reflect on the next steps for data science on the St. Lawrence.
