The Nanaimo Port Authority and Canada’s Ministry of International Trade will partner to develop a short-sea shipping project in British Columbia to further bolster Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI). Under APGCI, the Government of Canada is contributing up to $4.65 million to modernize the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf area and rehabilitate an aging dock that has been inactive for more than a decade because of its condition. The project will enhance the port’s ability to handle increased volume in a more efficient manner, thereby creating local jobs, economic growth and prosperity. It will also decrease road congestion and travel time for users by establishing a direct water link for Vancouver Island importers and exporters to Asia-Pacific markets.
