BC Ferries is strengthening its commitment to local industry and environmental responsibility by deciding to recycle two of its retired vessels entirely within British Columbia. Instead of transporting the vessels elsewhere, the work on the Bowen Queen and the Powell River Queen will be carried out at the Esquimalt Graving Dock, followed by final processing in Surrey.
Marine Recycling Corporation (MRC), one of Canada’s most experienced marine recycling firms and a Green Marine participant, will lead the dismantling and ensure that all work is fully compliant with provincial and federal safety and environmental regulations. Point Hope Maritime, another Green Marine participant, will take part in the project by providing up to 25 skilled employees at the Esquimalt Graving Dock.
This project could be the first of many. More than 900 vessels are expected to be decommissioned in British Columbia over the next decade. As one of many operators faced with this challenge, BC Ferries sees it as an ideal opportunity to invest in domestic infrastructure. Recycling the initial two vessels will serve as proof of concept as the company prepares for future projects, such as dismantling the retired Mayne Queen and the soon-to-be-retired Quadra Queen II. The long-term goal is to build a system that supports local jobs, reduces environmental impact, and strengthens BC’s industrial capabilities.
