SF Bay Ferry takes a new step toward zero-emissions

April 9, 2025

Green Marine participant San Francisco Bay Ferry (SF Bay Ferry) has taken another major step toward achieving its zero-emission goal by commissioning two new fully electric ferries.

The project, entrusted to Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB), is part of the Rapid Electric Emission-Free Ferry (REEF) program, an ambitious initiative dedicated to cutting emissions within the Bay Area’s maritime transportation network.

Designed to carry 200 passengers at speeds of up to 25 knots, the new ferries will feature advanced electric propulsion systems powered by scalable energy solutions. Their operation will reduce emissions on busy routes linking Oakland, Alameda and San Francisco.

The project is part of a broader network transformation, including the conversion of diesel ferries, terminal electrification, and the modernization of maintenance facilities.
