Seeking a General manager for Green Marine Europe

Green Marine International is looking for a General Manager who will be responsible for the management and growth of Green Marine’s certification program in Europe.
Reporting to the President and CEO of Green Marine International, the General Manager of Green Marine Europe will manage the daily operations in Europe and ensure alignment with Green Marine International’s guidelines and procedures.

About Green Marine Europe

Green Marine Europe is an environmental certification for the European maritime industry that Surfrider Foundation Europe has managed for the last four years under a license agreement from Green Marine (North America). It was recently incorporated in France as an association (Loi 1901) that is part of an international structure called Green Marine International. The governance transition is ongoing and will be completed by early 2025.

Responsabilities

1. Strategic Leadership:

  • Drive the growth and expansion of Green Marine Europe's certification program across the maritime sector.

2. Operational Management:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring effective implementation of certification protocols and standards in alignment with Green Marine International’s guidelines and procedures.
  • Coordinate the steering committee and other meetings as required to support program development and improvement
  • Manage administrative functions, budgeting, and resource allocation to support program objectives.

3. Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Cultivate relationships with key personnel within member organizations to ensure a high level of engagement
  • Collaborate with external partners (government, environmental and academic organizations) to promote Green Marine Europe’s achievements and enhance its visibility and reputation.
  • Explore partnerships with other maritime-related environmental sustainability initiatives to further Green Marine Europe’s mission.

4. Advocacy and Representation:

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for Green Marine Europe, advocating for environmental sustainability within the maritime sector.
  • Represent Green Marine at conferences, industry events, with governmental agencies and other relevant stakeholders.

5. Collaborative Leadership:

  • Close collaboration with Green Marine staff in North America
  • The selected individual’s posture should be grounded in the following skills: active listening and empathy, adaptability, ethical behaviour, and non-violent communication.

Qualifications

Education / Experience:

  • 15 years of professional experience in sustainability, association management, or leadership roles within the maritime industry is preferred.
  • A master’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, business administration, or a related field.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Industry knowledge: in-depth understanding of the maritime transportation sector, including regulatory frameworks, industry trends, and challenges.
  • Program knowledge: conversant understanding of the breadth of environmental issues covered within the scope of the Green Marine program for ship owners, ports, terminals, and shipyards: air emissions, greenhouse gases, aquatic ecosystems, community impacts and relations, dry bulk handling, oily water, ship recycling, stormwater, underwater noise, and waste management.
  • Strong motivation to promote sustainability in the maritime transportation sector.
  • Proven prioritization, time management and project management skills.
  • Business, financial and people-management skills
  • A team player, personable, energetic, and possess strong communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and results-driven; prefers to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
  • Highly effective written and interpersonal communication skills; uses diplomacy and tact in all interactions.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Languages :

  • Excellent ability to communicate (oral and written) in English and French.
  • Additional languages spoken in the European Union are an asset.

Working Conditions

Location:

  • Mainly remote work. An office location has not yet been determined.

Required Travel:

  • Valid passport required for regular travel in Europe and internationally.

Compensation:

  • Competitive salary based on the candidate’s profile and experience.
  • This is a full-time, salaried position (CDI contract located in France).
  • “Cadre dirigeant” status.

Start Date:

  • Early 2025.
