The Environmental Managers Association of BC presented Seaspan with its Organization Environmental Program award at its gala on June 14th for the company’s electric-vehicle (EV) shuttlebus program.
Seaspan’s acquisition of three EV shuttlebuses for its Pemberton, B.C., location marked a major step towards its goal of achieving net-zero emission by 2050 as it also responded to increasing demand for transportation to and from Vancouver Shipyards.
Transporting more than 270 employees daily, the EV shuttles save 45,000 litres (1,188 gallons) of fuel annually. Over a decade, they are expected to save an estimated 700 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent.
Each shuttle has 21 passenger seats and a range of approximately 160 kilometres (almost 100 miles) on a single charge. Using ChargePoint’s first Level 3 charger installed in Canada, the shuttles can be recharged within 30 to 45 minutes.
The shuttles feature distinctive Indigenous artwork designed by Olivia George of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation (səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ), and Ray Natraoro of the Squamish Nation (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw). The designs represent Seaspan’s commitment to be responsible, inclusive and welcoming to the Nations and communities where the company operates.
