The shipbuilding and maritime transportation company Seaspan ULC based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, is taking significant steps toward reducing carbon emissions. Seaspan has implemented various clean energy initiatives in collaboration with B.C. Hydro, that include using cleaner hydroelectricity for tugboats, worker shuttles, shunt trucks, and hybrid ferries.
B.C. Hydro’s collaboration with Seaspan’s energy management team has also resulted in the greater use of LED lighting, electric air compressors, and other energy-efficient technologies. The efficiency measures at Seaspan’s three shipyards reduced energy consumption by approximately 600,000 kWh in 2023, which is roughly the energy used by 50 households.
Seaspan has also partnered with the Haisla Nation to deploy the world's first fully electric tugboats in Kitimat, B.C. Designed in British Columbia, the cleaner and quieter tugboats benefit workers and marine life alike.
Seaspan's commitment to sustainability includes further plans to expand its electric-powered fleet and reduce emissions across its operations, contributing to a cleaner and more efficient maritime industry.
