Saguenay–St. Lawrence prepares for a greater Marine Park

July 5, 2025

The Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park could soon triple in size!

Canada and Quebec’s environment ministers confirmed their intention this past spring to expand the Marine Park to approximately 4,500 square kilometres (1,737 square miles), which is 3.6 times its current size. This commitment is part of Canada’s broader target to protect 30% of its marine territory by 2030 and to strengthen the conservation of the St. Lawrence River ecosystems.

The expansion will contribute to the protection of marine species, the promotion of sustainable tourism, and the development of new research and education initiatives. The management of the expanded Marine Park will draw on stronger collaboration with partners and local communities to ensure the territory is managed responsibly and governed inclusively.

The project was shared with nearly 230 organizations during targeted consultations from the Fall of 2023 to the Summer of 2024. These exchanges resulted in a territorial proposal that was presented during public consultations held October 21st to December 13th, 2024. The public feedback indicated strong consensus and widespread support for the proposed area.

The park’s official expansion will occur after Quebec’s Council of Ministers and Canada’s Governor in Council have issued the necessary decrees. Project organizers expect the expansion to be implemented by 2026. In the meantime, existing regulations remain in effect for the current 1,245 km² (481 sq mi).
