A look at the 2024 Performance Report highlights

Green Marine reached several important milestones in its 17th year of providing a program for environmental performance evaluations. With an expanded international reach and unprecedented member engagement, the 2024 results offer a clear picture of the collective efforts driving a greener, more responsible, and more innovative maritime industry.

Here are some of the report’s standout results:

Reaching new international frontiers

  • Green Marine International, which oversees the Green Marine and Green Marine Europe certification programs, has more than 560 members worldwide.
  • The program has been expanded to maritime operations in Australia, Mexico and the Bahamas, with new participants Manly Fast Ferry Pty Ltd, the Port Authority of New South Wales, SSA Marine Mexico, and Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd.
  • Green Marine now counts more than 180 participants, including 22 terminals newly certified in 2024, within its membership.

Stronger engagement and tangible progress

  • In 2024, 243 self-evaluations were submitted under the Green Marine program, representing a 10% increase from the previous year.
  • A total of 1,673 performance indicators were reported, compared to 1,419 in 2023, marking a significant 18% increase.
  • More than 43% of participants achieved an average Level 3 or higher, reflecting a strong level of commitment.
  • Approximately 19% of participants gained one net level, 14% gained two, and 5% gained more than five.
  • Returning participants gained an average of one net level over the previous year, showing consistent year-over-year progress.

A smarter tool for better progress

The Smart Guide, Green Marine’s online self-evaluation platform, continued to evolve in 2024 to better support participants. Notable improvements included:

  • An autofill feature for returning users.
  • A new division component for multi-site or multi-sector organizations.
  •  Integrated minimum verification report requirements.

These advancements are making environmental certification as accessible, user-friendly, and rigorous as possible for all participants.
