Québec strengthens its leadership through the 2026–2035 City-Port Vision

January 15, 2026

The City of Québec and the Port of Québec have unveiled a joint vision to guide their cooperation over the coming decade. The 2026–2035 City-Port Vision, aims to make Québec City a sustainable and innovative port and maritime hub.

The vision highlights the strategic role of port infrastructure, recognized as essential to supporting trade and supply, and whose modernization is now indispensable to preserving regional competitiveness while improving harmony between the city and the port. In this context, concrete actions are already underway, including speed control and heavy-vehicle management in the Old Port. Other initiatives are also being developed, including the use of mobility data, a review of governance for public spaces, and, as of 2027, consideration of a biennial forum on port and maritime trends.

One of the most notable elements of the announcement is the establishment in Québec City of World Association for Port Cities' (AIVP) North American representation. The international organization, which brings together more than 180 cities in 45 countries, will contribute its recognized expertise in sustainable port development. Its presence in Québec stems from combined support from the City, the Port, and the provincial government.

This move comes in a context where Green Marine International (GMI) and AIVP renewed and expanded their partnership in November 2025, building on the collaboration first launched in 2018. The updated memorandum of understanding is intended to enhance the scope and impact of efforts supporting sustainable and better‑integrated ports.

Through this joint vision, Québec aims to consolidate its strategic position in global trade and distinguish itself as a benchmark in port innovation and environmental sustainability.
