After eight years of research and development, ProtectedSeas has launched the first global map of marine life regulations and their applicable boundaries. The new online Navigator to the regulatory seascape focuses particularly on documenting in-place legal restrictions on human activities.
ProtectedSeas, a Green Marine supporter, initiated the project with the questions: What is protected? And where is it protected? “We created this one-of-a-kind tool to assist international ocean conservation planning and assessment,” says Virgil Zetterlind, the director of ProtectedSeas.
The Navigator brings together independently verified regulatory information for more than 21,000 marine protected areas into one interactive map as a first step towards understanding where current marine protections exist.
