Prince Rupert Port Authority marks its Green Wave program’s 10th year

February 23, 2023

The Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) is celebrating a decade of its Green Wave program, an environmental incentive program to encourage ship owners and operators to invest in sustainable practices.

Since its 2013 launch, the Green Wave program has helped the Port  of Prince Rupert to move towards its 2050 goal of carbon neutrality by providing financial incentives to ship owners and operators based on each vessel’s minimized air emissions and underwater noise.

In 2022 alone, 208 vessel calls met the strict criteria to qualify for the program. To celebrate Green Wave’s 10th anniversary, PRPA honoured five companies for their outstanding participation in the initiative. The 2022 Green Wave Award recipients included one Green Marine participant, BC Ferries, as well as MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, COSCO Shipping Lines, SM Line, and Navigator Gas, LLC.

As one of only two ports in Canada to currently provide shore power to container vessels at berth, the Port of Prince Rupert also introduced a new incentive to the program last year for cargo vessels that plug into shore power at the Fairview Container Terminal.
