Northwest Indiana Partners for Clean Air has recognized Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor as one of the regional organizations that has voluntarily improved air quality.
Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor was nominated by South Shore Clean Cities, a Green Marine supporter, and received the industrial award to highlight its commitment to cleaner air through specific initiatives in 2020.
The initiatives included the port obtaining an Indiana Office of Energy Development grant to purchase an electric-powered security vehicle for use at its Burns Harbor operations.
Port workers further improved air quality by planting hundreds of trees around the port territory to increase biodiversity, reduce stormwater runoff, and prevent dust dispersion.
