Ports of Halifax and Hamburg sign MoU to decarbonize their maritime route

September 29, 2022

Captain Allan Gray, Halifax Port Authority’s President and CEO, and Jens Meier, Hamburg Port Authority’s CEO, announced a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on September 29th to collaborate on decarbonizing the shipping corridor between their locations.

Wanting to take the lead on the net-zero path by using green hydrogen as a marine fuel, the port authorities will focus on developing infrastructure for bunkering and exporting green hydrogen and derivatives at both ports.

“The Halifax Port Authority and Hamburg Port Authority are demonstrating leadership in this sector,” Nova Scotia’s Premier Tim Houston stated. “They are not waiting for the arrival of hydrogen to begin their operational changes. They are doing the work today.”

Under the MoU, both ports intend to foster collaboration among value chain partners, shipping lines, and other key stakeholders to advance the use of green energy within the shipping corridor, as well as share knowledge, technology and established or developed industry contacts to accelerate decarbonization along this route.
