Port of Vancouver augments EcoAction incentives for cleaner- and quieter-running ships

January 3, 2023

The Port of Vancouver has established a new award level in its EcoAction Program to increase the incentives for ships that call on the port using low-emission fuels and technologies, as well as those certified as operating more quietly.

As of January 1, 2023, EcoAction’s new platinum level offers a discount of up to 75% off harbour dues for ships that:

  • use low-emission, alternative fuels, such as methanol, hydrogen or LNG
  • use technologies to reduce emissions, such as connecting to shore power, or having wind or battery assist
  • are certified as quiet vessels by a ship classification society, thereby reducing underwater noise for the benefit of at-risk whale species.

Launched in 2007, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s EcoAction Program recognizes shipping lines that make voluntary investments in cleaner fuels, technologies, or in environmental management that helps to maintain and protect the environment in and around the Port of Vancouver.

The EcoAction program recognizes Green Marine's performance on its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and underwater noise performance indicators. Green Marine members calling at the Port of Vancouver and using technologies to reduce GHG emissions and underwater noise can apply for a port fee reduction of up to 47%.

More than 5,000 calls to the Port of Vancouver have received an EcoAction discount, which has saved various shipping lines millions of dollars in harbour dues while also encouraging reductions in greenhouse gases, air contaminants, and underwater noise.
