Port of Sept-Îles partners with INREST’s research arm to improve water quality monitoring

April 12, 2024

The Port of Sept-Îles and the Centre for Industrial Port Expertise launched the Enviro-Actions project by deploying an innovative scientific buoy on April 3rd to improve water quality monitoring.

Equipped with advanced technologies, this buoy samples the waters of the Port of Sept-Îles, while two additional fixed stations will be installed to monitor water quality in the bay. The goal is to transmit real-time data to preventively act if the water exceeds the acceptable thresholds set by the Enviro-Actions model.

The Centre is a division of INREST (the Northern Institute for Research in Environment and Occupational Health and Safety). “This is a first in Quebec and positions (the Centre) and the Port of Sept-îles as leaders in ensuring sustainable development and the preservation of ecosystems,” says Julie Carrière, the executive director of INREST and its research centre.

The five-year project, funded by the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Transportation and Mobility and the Port of Sept-Îles, aims to implement preventive environmental management strategies to maintain and improve the ecosystem. This includes measuring underwater noise from commercial vessels and planning actions to mitigate its impacts on marine life.
