Port of Seattle’s sustainability momentum continues

January 16, 2026

The Port of Seattle has launched 2026 with new Commission leadership and a strong commitment to sustainable development. Ryan Calkins, an experienced Port Commissioner and sustainability advocate who also serves as an Advisor on Offshore Wind and Maritime Infrastructure at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, has officially assumed the role of Commission President, reinforcing the Port’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and economic opportunity throughout the region.

Calkins emphasized the Port’s role in shaping a sustainable economy, stating: “The Port of Seattle is transforming our transportation sector through pioneering investments in clean fuels and vital support for training and education that equips the next generation of workers.”

The change in leadership follows the January 13 Commission meeting, where Toshiko Hasegawa concluded her term as president. Commissioners Fred Felleman, serving his third four-year term and recognized as the first Port of Seattle Commissioner elected on an environmental and clean energy platform, and Sam Cho, who served as Commission President in 2023, were selected to serve as vice president and secretary.

The Port heads into the year building on key 2025 achievements, including decarbonization progress, expanded shore power infrastructure, and continued development of the Maritime Innovation Center at Fishermen’s Terminal. This momentum supports long-term goals of reducing emissions, restoring habitat, and creating pathways to family‑wage jobs across maritime and aviation sectors.

The Commission and Port of Seattle’s executive director, Stephen P. Metruck, will share more about the Port’s 2026 priorities at the State of the Port event on March 12.
