Port of Seattle‌ relates major environmental strides in new report

The Port of Seattle has released its 2025 Environment and Sustainability Report, providing an overview of its environmental performance, key initiatives, and continued efforts to integrate sustainability into its maritime and aviation operations.

The report details progress across the port's climate, environmental stewardship, and infrastructure priorities while reaffirming its long-term commitments to reducing emissions, protecting ecosystems, and building more resilient operations. It also highlights collaboration with industry, government agencies, and local communities to support sustainable growth.

Reported initiatives include shore power expansion, sustainable fuel development, habitat restoration, fleet electrification, waste reduction, and contaminated site remediation. Other projects focused on protecting water quality, reducing underwater noise, and advancing sustainable building practices.

Key highlights include:

• 44% reduction in port-controlled emissions compared to the 2005 baseline level.
• 68% of cruise ships plugged into shore power.
• $3 million in federal Clean Ports Program funding secured for sustainable fuel transition.
• 450 feet (16 metres) of salmon habitat created, and 1.4 acres of floodplain established along Miller Creek in Burien and SeaTac.

The report also includes the port’s 2025 environmental performance within the Green Marine certification program. The port achieved the highest Level 5 for six of the eight performance indicators applicable to its maritime operations.

Future priorities outlined in the report include achieving 100% shore power connectivity for homeported cruise vessels by 2027, advancing clean fuel projects for maritime and aviation sectors, and expanding habitat restoration efforts in the Green-Duwamish watershed.
