Port of Seattle formalizes its Port Land Stewardship Principles

July 11, 2023

The Port of Seattle Commission has adopted principles to guide the development of the port's environmental land management efforts in terms of forested, treed and other types of habitat.

Under this new order, specific principles have been established regarding land management practices on port properties. These practices include the organic landscaping of parks, the removal of invasive species, and tree planting in urban forests. The principles are intended to make future decisions with due consideration of equity and environmental justice.

The five main principles are to:

  1. Use a comprehensive approach to environmental land stewardship, including treed, forested and other types of habitat.
  2. Maximize opportunities to increase trees, forest, and other habitat as part of infrastructure planning and design.
  3. Apply an equity and environmental justice lens to environmental land stewardship.
  4. Support community partnerships and leverage intergovernmental coordination and port funds to catalyze stewardship processes and outcomes.
  5. Use a holistic approach to stewardship to ensure trees, forest and other habitat are healthy and sustainable.
