The Port of Seattle has announced the availability of $500,000 in funding for community-led environmental improvement projects through its South King and Port Communities Fund Environmental Improvements Program (EIP) for 2025. Community-based organizations in the areas near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and across South King County are invited to apply for grants ranging up to $20,000 for a one-year project or up to $60,000 for multi-year initiatives.
This year’s funding is applicable to a range of eligible projects, including habitat restoration, tree planting, environmental education, as well as public art installations with an environmental focus. Through such initiative with community-based organizations, the port aims to improve green spaces, restore local forests, and create healthier, more livable neighbourhoods surrounding the airport.
The program is a response to the disproportionate environmental burdens experienced by historically underserved and economically disadvantaged communities in the region. Previous funding rounds have enabled local groups to plant trees, restore green spaces, remove invasive species, and improve park amenities — all local community priorities.
By providing fund for projects developed in collaboration with local stakeholders, the port is demonstrating a strong commitment to engaging communities, encouraging environmental stewardship, and advancing sustainability. These efforts align with Green Marine’s objectives for port operators to foster active community engagement, reduce environmental impacts, and innovate in environmental leadership through partnerships and on-the-ground improvements.
