Port of San Diego makes major strides in maritime clean air strategy

September 12, 2025

The Port of San Diego is advancing impressively on its Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS), having implemented or made significant progress on 80% of the defined objectives, according to the latest MCAS Highlights Report.

Since 2019, the port's maritime operations have achieved:

  • a 46% reduction in diesel particulate matter;
  • a 32% decrease in nitrogen oxides;
  • and a 10% drop in carbon dioxide emissions.

The MCAS aligns with the Port’s “Health Equity for All” vision by promoting projects and initiatives that reduce air pollution while maintaining efficient maritime operations. Over $227 million has been committed to marine electrification and efficiency, including electric equipment, zero-emission trucks, infrastructure upgrades, and community outreach programs.

This progress reflects a strong commitment to greener maritime operations and healthier communities along San Diego Bay, setting a benchmark for ports striving for environmental sustainability.
