Port of San Diego is doubling shore-power capacity for cruise ships

January 12, 2022

The Port of San Diego is making steady progress towards doubling the shore-power capability at its B Street and Broadway Pier cruise-ship terminals.

In January, the Board of Port Commissioners awarded a $268,000 contract to the San Diego-based company Baker Electric Inc. to install the electrical equipment acquired by the port during the project’s initial phase.

Having a second outlet will permit two cruise vessels to connect to the electrical grid rather than running diesel engines while in port. In addition to reducing greenhouse gases, the initiative will significantly reduce the port’s nitrogen oxide (NOx) and diesel particulate matter emissions as it also improves air quality in the San Diego Bay area.

The installation is under way with the new plug-in location expected to be available this August.
