Port of San Diego invests in smarter marina power

August 13, 2025

The Port of San Diego has announced the 12th project in its Blue Economy Incubator (BEI) as it continues to expand this platform for maritime innovation. Its Board of Port Commissioners has approved a one-year pilot project for $250,000 with VoltSafe Inc., an electrification startup working to modernize marina power with safer, smarter and greener solutions.

VoltSafe’s new shore-power system reimagines how marinas deliver electricity. By introducing a magnetic connection to replace traditional plugs, it ensures safer power transfer while still withstanding harsh marine conditions. The system is paired with software that gives operators the capabilities to track usage, detect leaks, and anticipate peak demand in real time. By facilitating data-driven decisions, it enhances both waterfront safety and efficiency.

The partnership with VoltSafe reflects the BEI’s mission. Since 2016, the BEI has served as a launchpad for companies developing sustainable ocean-based technologies. The BEI has advanced projects ranging from aquaculture and water-quality monitoring to smart buoy systems and climate resilience tools. MarineLabs, a Green Marine partner, provides real-time coastal data that helps ports plan for climate resilience.

By combining funding with access to property, regulatory guidance, and operational support, the program has created an environment where entrepreneurs can transform concepts into reality. The addition of VoltSafe highlights how the BEI continues to expand its portfolio, driving innovation and sustainability across San Diego’s waterfront.
